Surrey S.H.A.R.E.S (Sharing, Heartfelt, Achievement, Resilience, Empowerment and Stories) was designed to connect communities through storytelling and has a strong focus on reducing senior isolation, connecting cultures and personal development. The program has successfully integrated an inter-generational component to their programming by extending the age of participants from 55+ to 18+. However, 65% of participants still remain 55+. Program coordinator and Life Coach, Jessika Houston reports success in this endeavour as she observes bonds being formed between the youth and senior participants. She believes this has only enhanced her program.

Jessika has amassed over 20 years of experience. Through life coaching certification, personal coaching, self-help books, seminars, counselling, workshops and meditation Jessika has developed a unique skill set which she uses to uplift her community. During the course of the 12-week program, Jessika will lead participants through self care, wellness, personal exploration and growth-based activities. After Jessika has facilitated the essential skills, co-coordinator Noel Bentley will lead participants through the use of basic technology to communicate and record their progress. Noel will assist participants with writing, editing and accessibility concerns throughout the drafting process. The program culminates with all participants telling a personal story which is recorded for their use and to share with family, friends and the community.

Surrey SHARES is a unique and engaging program which former participant and Surrey local, Bob Miliken, found to be “an incredible opportunity” in which he was able to “delve into untested waters.” Join Bob in trying something new and enriching your communities’ culture and heritage. Visit Surrey SHARES on Facebook and Youtube to view previously recorded stories and sign up for a future cohort!

Your story’s waiting to be heard.
