The weather is starting to turn poor, but that doesn’t mean your birding adventures have to stop here! Long-time Seniors’ Centre Without Walls (SCWW) partner, A Rocha Canada, offers us the opportunity to learn more about our local birds from the comfort and warmth of our own homes!

Seniors with an interest in birds and birding gather together over the telephone to learn everything from how to identify specific birds visually and through their bird calls, to how we can promote the health and safety of our local bird populations! Even if you’re new to birding, you can easily start just from your own home! Participants of the birding sessions have noted:

“I don’t see too well, but even when I relax in my chair by the window I’ve been able to identify more birds around my house just by knowing what their calls sound like!”

“It’s fun to try and figure out which bird call is which bird, even if you can’t see them.”

“The folks from A Rocha do such a great job at teaching and explaining about the different birds; the handouts are very good too!”

“Very educational and informative.”

So if you’ve ever wondered what that chirping outside your window is, then this is the program for you! We’ve covered all sorts of birds, including swallows, shorebirds, owls, raptors, and more! Future sessions will include ducks, geese, and other local avian.

The “Birding with A Rocha” program will return in early 2022. In the meantime, you can also join A Rocha Canada’s weekly community bird walks! You can find out more about the weekly bird walks here: https://arocha.ca/portfolio-items/weekly-bird-walks/
